time to gather fresh flowers!

Growing up Catholic, May Day at Sacred Heart school meant honoring the Virgin Mary with fresh flowers. We would all walk outside in 2 straight lines to the little altar with the white statue of the Virgin and the Sister would place the flowers at Mary's feet. Small climbing roses wound around the grotto, framing Mary in light pink. Just a lovely sight. When I switched to public school I got my first taste of dancing gaily around a May Pole. Ribbons! Flowers! Music! It was all so beautiful. It would be MUCH later that I would learn the Pagan beginnings of this feast day. And laugh that its originals had so much to do with fertility. And Mayhaying. Since the Virgin was, well, a Virgin.
But this eve begins Beltane and a time for dancing around a bonfire... and tomorrow May Day, a day to gather fresh flowers and weave them in our hair. And celebrate spring budding and blooming in all its fertile glory. And since certain members of my family are desiring to start a family of their own, it seems the perfect day to wish ripe abundance to all. Blessings...
